Today I was playing with Yelp, which is an amazing thing. If you have not been on the site it is pretty nifty.
Here is a link for the Chinese Restaurant Review that I completed.
So then, based on the recent discussions that the city has had, and allowing two additional massage parlors in the city, I decided to see what Yelp had to say about it.
According to Yelp, there are 13 massage/spas within walking distance of downtown Doraville.
And I know there are more because it didn't include the newest one at Plaza One or Royal Spa on Shallowford. Come on City Council!!! We don't need any more! I have a post coming on what I hope you can accomplish this spring. Stay tuned!

IMO the whole massage issue has become a mess, and efforts to fix it (the massage ordinance) may have made it worse.
ReplyDeleteI support limiting the number of such establishments in town, but we have to be extremely careful about trying to shut down existing businesses.
The problem is the term "massage" may mean licensed physical/massage therapists, Spa Sydell, foot massage, or sex establishments. Obviously we don't want or need sex trade in Doraville, but a Spa Sydell or medical practitioners may fit. Foot massage establishments are in a gray area. I've traveled in Shanghai and foot massage is part of the Asian culture. The vast majority of establishments are on the up and up, and we should be closely monitoring them for any illegal activity. Having said that, some tend to look kind of seedy and may not attract more desirable businesses.
I believe good infrastructure, competent development and planning practices, and a well-run city government will attract the kinds of business we want which will displace less desirable establishments. We can zone all we want but in the end the commercial property owners will rent to whoever brings in the most money (within the law). They would much prefer high-end businesses because they pay more rent.
There is a meeting scheduled for January 12th which will allow commercial property owners, businesses and citizens to voice their concerns.

Mr. Roche, really...I don't see a Spa Sydell anywhere near Doraville. As a matter of fact, I don't see a Pizza Hut, Longhorns, Outback or anything close to what other cities have. SO please don't act like you guys are doing anything to draw quality upstanding establishments in our city. I don't mean that in a disrepectful way either. Just the facts.
ReplyDeleteIf we had a Pizza Hut and an Outback and an Olive Garden then we could be just like every other cookie cutter town from Ft Lauderdale to Portland. That would be great. We have some very nice UNIQUE restaurants in Doraville that get good reviews from the food critics. Patronize the people that take a chance and make your town different rather than griping about how it's not the same as Dunwoody
ReplyDeleteI would like to know why they are open until 11 PM. Also I wonder where they advertise.

I have no problem with DIFFERENT. Problem is that's all we have. It would be nice to have a blend of resturants to choose from. Too much or ALL international is not what I consider a good thing. I love some of the international resturants Doraville has. It would just be nice to go out and get a steak every now and then though.
